What can you use the app for?

EtherPad is designed to make working together on written documents much easier than it normally is. With etherpad it’s possible for two (or more) people to work together without having to sit next to one another. Although Google docs does feature collaboration features these are no where near instant. The changes made to your document will instantly be reflected on our colleagues screens wherever they are in the world. It’s useful for anything where editing text is important, including programming, working on articles, or even hosting meetings online. Etherpad makes it possible to work with other people and make sure that everyone is on the same page.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Etherpad was created by Appjet which is a platform that’s been used to create thousands of different applications.

What are the differences to other apps?

Unlike many other online collaboration software packages this one is instant, this means that any changes you make to the document will be made available to other viewers instantly without any annoying lag. How does the web app look and feel to use?

EtherPad is an attractive site which has a very nice and easy to use user interface. It just looks like a simple text editor; you are then free to edit the document however you want. Your changes will be highlighted so that other people can see what you’ve been doing. There is also a chat feature which makes it possible for users to discuss changes and talk about what’s going on with the document. Inviting people to help you with the document is very easy and it’s just a matter of copying the URL or clicking on the links to send them an email invitation. The only bad thing is that it doesn’t have separate pages; everything is put onto the same page which you can then scroll through. This might make working on large documents very difficult because finding out where the other people are will be a problem.

How does the registration process work?

There’s no need to sign up to create a free Pad, you just need to click the button to create one. You will then instantly see a copy of your pad where you are free to make changes. Inviting people is as simple as either emailing them from within the app, or just giving them the random URL address which they can copy and paste into their browser so that they can see the changes you are making and also make other changes. There is an option to register and install the software on your own server. This does require registration and payment.

What does it cost to use the application?

EtherPad free is completely free, you only have to pay for the application if you want to download it and install it on your own server within your corporation. There will also be a paid on demand service available soon which is aimed more at business users. The free system will be a great solution for many people wanting to find a way to work together.

Who would you recommend the application to?

EtherPad is ideal for anyone that wants to work together with people all around the world on any projects that require text editing. It’s great for programmers or writers and is one of the best and quickest ways to collaborate.
